Nestled along the sun-drenched shores of Sri Lanka’s famed south coast, Tangalle is an enchanting destination and here are some of its top allures.
Tangalle Beach
The soft sands of the local beach bordered by the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean provide the ultimate coastal escape. For true seaside seclusion, you can stay at properties like Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort right beside an isolated part of the shore away from any crowds; apart from sunbathing and taking in magical sunsets, it’s a great spot for activities like yoga, stand-up paddleboarding and surfing for beginners.
Rekawa Beach
An equally scenic shoreline can be found at nearby Rekawa Beach in Sri Lanka; luxury resorts in Tangalle offer easy access to this spot which is well-known as being a place where five turtle species come to lay their eggs every April to September. For something truly rewarding, you can join local volunteers as they patrol the beach at night to protect nesting turtles; you may even get a chance to see baby turtles make their way out to the ocean too!
Hummanaya Blowhole
Close to Tangalle is a natural phenomenon called the Hummanaya Blowhole in Dickwella that attracts locals and foreign tourists alike; it makes a rather distinctive sound, and the water spray can reach heights of around 25 to 30 metres at varying intervals. It’s well worth taking in and photographing too from an elevated vantage point; don’t forget to mention on your Insta or FB posts that it’s also the second largest blowhole in the world!
Mulkirigala Rock Temple
Amongst the popular things to do in Tangalle is to take an excursion to the stunning Mulkirigala Rock Temple; it enjoys a breathtaking location on a rocky hillock that towers to a height of around 210 metres and the walk, up hundreds of steps leading to the summit, is all part of the adventure! At this captivating site which has a history of more than 2,000 years, you will come across a temple and ancient caves with statues and painted murals.
