Home to the wild Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, Zambia is an oasis of natural beauty. Vast open meadows, endless glistening bodies of water and an abundance of wildlife will surely make you want to stay here forever. Here are some useful facts to have on hand when you’re planning your unforgettable Zambian holiday.
Where to stay
As this is one of the world’s most sought-after experiences, there are many accommodation options available so that you can choose one that suits your needs the best. If you’re into backpacking and camping in the wilderness or looking to experience the authentic Zambian way of life there are hostels, campsites and guest houses everywhere in the country. If you’re more into a refined luxury experience, there are many hotels and Victoria Falls resorts such as the likes of Avani Hotel and Resorts.
Getting around in the country
There are airports flying both domestic and international flights linked to almost every major city so travelling by air is by far the most convenient method of getting to anywhere you want to be while you’re here. Moreover, there are chartered flights to airstrips in the national parks quite regularly. There are taxis in the cities but unless you’re a good haggler, a fair price cannot be guaranteed unless it’s metered. If you want to minimise air travel, buses are ideal and come at a really reasonable price. However, Zambia is a warm country and the public busses generally do not have air conditioning or seat belts.
Zambian Food
Zambian culture is not too popular in the world. But once you taste the hearty, homemade dishes of this land you will crave Zambian food for years to come. Nishima is the heart of all meals here and it’s a maise porridge usually served with some meat or fish. If you’re a vegetarian Ifishashi is the perfect dish for you; made lovingly with peanuts and kale it’s a thick, filling soup that will warm up your entire soul. Michopo is Zambia’s version of the Aussie BBQ. It is grilled meat on BBQ outside. Michopo is usually paired with good company and maise beer.
Other important details
As health and safety are of utmost importance, aside from the Covid 19 vaccines, you’re advised to take medications for Malaria and yellow fever. Zambia is a very safe country to travel to and the people are known to be very friendly and hospitable. But this does not mean that you shouldn’t take necessary precautions such as using locks on your luggage and keeping your belongings safe with you. Another important detail to remember is to avoid bright coloured clothing such as red or orange when you’re going on safaris.
