Steeped in history, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the key attractions in Kandy and offers captivating insights into the island’s religious heritage.
Planning a Visit
This venerated temple is in the hill capital of Kandy which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within a 15-minute drive from Earl’s Regent Kandy, it overlooks a lake and is near the town centre. The temple is open from 5:30 am to 8:00 pm and visitors must wear clothes covering bare shoulders and legs and remove footwear too.
The Temple’s Significance
Before visiting this site from nearby hotels in Kandy, it’s important you find out more about its significance. Locally known as the Sri DaladaMaligawa, the temple houses what is believed to be a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. Kept in a gold casket, this relic is not taken out though during times reserved for rituals, devotees and visitors can enter the room it’s kept in.

The Esala Perahera
The temple is also the focal point of the annual Esala Perahera held in July / August. This renowned cultural event includes processions where the sacred tooth relic is taken on parade; these colourful processions feature elephants as well as musicians, Kandyan dancers, fire-eaters, jugglers and more.
