The Indonesian district of Bali, located close to Java, is complete with its own active volcano, known as Mount Agung. The district benefits greatly from this volcanic environment, which contributes to high rainfall and the creation of favourable conditions for a flourishing agricultural sector. Bali is also blessed with a thriving marine environment and is surrounded by coral reefs, which in turn are a great asset for the tourism industry. However, one should not be fooled into believing that Bali is all, and only, about the natural beauty. This idyllic district also boasts of a rich culture and a long history and the island is scattered with iconic places of interest. One such attraction that is visited by tourists is the Taman Gili Kerta Gosa.
The Taman Gili Kerta Gosa, also known as the Kerta Gosa, is a part of the complex of the Puri Semarapura Royal Palace. This Royal Palace is found in Klungkung and is believed to have been built in 1686 by Dewa Agung Jambe and the Kerta Gosa was used as by the Royals to carry out rites of passage and other religious and social rituals. With the great colonisation movement that spread across the world, the Dutch sought to capture Bali as well.
In doing so, the Dutch military fought the locals and won the battle known as the Puputan Klungkung fight. The manner in which this battle took place has been preserved forevermore on the Puputan Klungkung monument, which can be witnessed at the Taman Gili Kerta Gosa. Furthermore, this hall was also used as a court by the Dutch, subsequent to winning the battle.
