About
Chinatown in Sydney was established in 1920 by the Chinese who began settling in Australia during the latter part of the 19th century. Today it is a bustling town where you’ll find some of the most fascinating things and places similar to what you would find in a town in China itself. The nightlife is vibrant and visiting here will certainly be a memorable experience.
Things to do here
Some of the main attractions you will find here are the food stalls and restaurants. Almost all the eateries serve decadent Asian food and they are the best you could find outside Asia. There are also a number of boutiques shops where you can buy Chinese antiquities and things which can only be bought in China. Travel fact; almost everything you get to buy here is pretty inexpensive too!
Events
Chinatown celebrates Chinese festivals according to the Chinese calendar along with many other events. Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival, Quixi Festival and the Qingming (Tomb Sweeping) Festival, are some of the festivals that are celebrated here. Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival is one of the biggest and most impressive Lunar New Year celebrations that happen outside Asia.
Reaching the town
A rail service operates from Central to Haymarket, which is located next to Chinatown and the market is just a stroll away from the Railway Station. The bus stop you need to get down to reach the town is stop number 17. You can also get here through a taxi from almost any part of Sydney.
Accommodation options
Chinatown itself offers a myriad of inexpensive accommodation options and by staying in one of them you can explore the area better. But if you are looking for a more comfortable accommodation option you can stay in one of the holiday apartments in Sydney which is located close to Chinatown the likes of Oaks Hyde Park Plaza.
