Among the many attractions in Maldives you will come across Sultan Park, which is on the island of Male. Two imposing iron gates mark the entrance to the park, standing opposite Islamic Centre on Medhuziyaaraiy Magu. It was in this location that the Royal Palace once stood. The Park stands for the country’s history and it once played an integral role in the lifestyle of the Maldivian people. It was a much loved landmark of visitors to the country and locals alike, who would visit this tranquil park to relax and enjoy the flora and fauna. In its heyday Sultan Park displayed a vast selection of tropical plants, including large shady trees and a number of lily ponds that adorned the beautifully landscaped lawns.
Today, Sultan Park has lost its luster and is rarely visited by locals. The National Museum also stands on the premises and is housed in the only remaining buildingof the Royal Palace. Visitors can view a collection of Royal artefacts at the museum. Several thrones, ceremonial parasols, sedan chairs and intricately lacquered boxes stand out among the items on display. Several other statues and figurines that have been collected from around the Maldivian islands are also exhibited.
