The Pettah Market
Most probably the busiest area of Colombo, the Pettah Market is where the locals go when they need almost anything. There’s nothing you can’t find here; it’s a major trades place and is always bustling with people and clamour. Plus, it’s not far from most hotels in Colombo city.
The Red Mosque
While you’re browsing through the trinkets in Pettah, look out for the Red Mosque. This iconic landmark is one of the holiest places of worship to the Muslim community and is a beautiful architectural masterpiece. Just make sure you’re wearing modest clothing and be careful when using cameras inside the premises.
Gangaramaya Temple
This Buddhist temple is a peaceful haven amidst the hustle and bustle of Colombo. Built fusing Thai, Chinese and Sri Lankan architecture, you can see how Buddhism is intricately woven into the livelihood of Sri Lankans and how all religions on the island merge in harmony. It is also an easy commute by tuk-tuk from hotels such as the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo.
Avukana Buddha replica
his magnificent Buddha statue is a replica of the historic Avukana Plilimaya in Anuradhapura. Located right in front of the BMICH, this is a landmark visited by many people. The 40-meter high statue is lovingly preserved by locals and you can see them worshipping or decorating the statue’s feet with flowers at any time of day.
Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil
The Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil, like the others, is distinguished by its vibrant colours. The temple’s interior ceiling is adorned with exquisite artwork. The temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil is claimed to be Colombo’s oldest Hindu temple.
