Jungle Beach is true to its name as it’s a beautiful bay semi-hidden by jungle. Don’t worry it’s not as remote as it sounds and civilization is within easy reach with many luxury hotels like the CoCo Bay Unawatuna are just a comfortable 5 minutes distance away. What you do need to be careful are the many con artists who would try to swindle you by trying to show you the way. Not only will they charge exorbitant prices but they will do so after taking you on unnecessarily long paths. Just remember that it will take you 30 minutes to walk from the Unawatuna town centre. Go along the Wella Dewalaya Road and turn right into the Yaddehimulla Road. If you take this road, you will come across several signposts showing you the way.
Snorkelling at Jungle Beach is quite easy and the beach is in good condition all year. Though it doesn’t have reefs as big as those of the marine national park of Hikkaduwa, its still considered a snorkelling haven compared to other small towns like Talpe. Also, like in other cases, you don’t need to hire a boat and go far into the sea as within the shallow waters itself you will find an abundance of marine life on a coral reef called the Bona Vista. This is located just a few meters away from the beach, so you can swim there easily.
