You will find no better place showcasing a splendid overview of the cultural significance of Sigiriya beyond its obvious natural beauty than the Sigiriya Museum. Read on to know more facts.
About
Located in three levels, climbing to each storey of the museum through the wide staircase gives one a feeling that is parallel to climbing to the summit of the rock. The atrium in the lobby almost frames the majestic rocky fortress offering a splendid view. Also, etched in glass is the thrilling story of King Kashyapa as told by a monk in the 13th century AD.
What’s inside?
Inside the museum, you will find an information centre, research centre and an office. The most interesting thing about this museum is that it does not hinder the view of Sigiriya rock castle. When you look at the building, you will realize how different it is as compared to the usual buildings in Sri Lanka. If you have plans to explore Sigiriya, you will need at least a day’s time. If you’re staying at a Sigiriya hotel the likes of Heritance Kandalama, you can easily plan your journey to explore what’s in this museum.
Travel back in time
One enters the museum through a brick tunnel; a replica of the excavated tunnel entrance to the Rock. Symbolically it also represents travelling back in time to the 5th century. The first area is the Prehistoric Gallery. Numerous iron tools, terracotta figurines, and pottery are displayed here.
A glimpse of pre-historic Sigiriya
You’ll get to know how some of the earliest inhabitants lived in Sigiriya about 10,000 years ago. Then, you will see the evolution from the hunters to the agricultural set up in Sigiriya.
