Located in Hong Kong, Shing Mun Reservoir as the name suggests is a reservoir that was built in 1933. The completion of the structure occurred somewhere in 1937. The area surrounding the reservoir is known for its natural beauty and is preserved and managed under Shing Mun Country Park. Due to its historical significance as being a pre-World War II water work structure, Shing Mun Reservoir was declared a monument in September 2009.
The Shing Mun Country Park was established in June, 1977 with the aim of preserving the area surrounding the park. Right at the head of the reservoir is an area known as ‘fung shui’. A special area with over 70 species of trees, this area receives special protection. The west of the reservoir has diverse vegetation including shrubs, trees and grasses. Camellia granthamiana is one of the rare species found in this area. It bears beautiful flowers, white in colour and being over 12 cm in diameter. It was found very recently and takes its name from a former Hong Kong governor called Sir Alexander Grantham.
A very popular leisure destination, the scenic areas of the park offer many hidden spots that visitors can discover during their treks. Begin a leisurely walk by the east bank of the reservoir and it will lead you it to the quiet and simply magnificent woodlands. Keep walking further and you can take a break at any of the cooling streams. Keep walking and you will enter the ‘fung shui’ area and also pass old Shing Mun villages. There are barbeque areas, toilets, rain shelters and kiosks, making the experience more convenient.
