Sea turtles are simply adorable creatures that have been roaming our oceans for millions of years. Unfortunately, six of the seven species have made their way into the endangered list thanks to mostly human interference. At Yala, the great wilderness in Sri Lanka, you’ll be able to meet five of this six.
Where is Yala?
Sri Lanka’s second largest and the most popular national park, Yala is located in the Southern Province good 6 hours away from Colombo. Therefore, you need to base yourself somewhere nearby to get the most out of your stay and enjoy the many things to do in Yala in ease. There are also some pretty cool eco friendly places located within the park itself like Chena Huts.

The five types of sea turtles that visit the shores of Yala include the giant Leatherback, the Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley and the Green turtles.
Why Are They Endangered?
While climate change has an impact on the lives of these innocent creatures, the main reason for them being endangered is due to human activities. Sea turtles are slaughtered for their meat, skin, shell and even the eggs are taken to make soup!
