Galle is the famous fort city of Sri Lanka. Today the Galle Fort has been long since labelled a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts plenty of tourists and locals alike. Dedicated to preserving and creating a safe environment for turtles, this hatchery was founded in 1981 and since then has actively been educating local authorities and communities. Turtles have been around for approximately 190 million years and today somewhere around eight species survive. Of the eight still in existence, five of them can be found nesting in Sri Lanka. The five species are; green turtle, olive ridley turtle, leatherhead turtle, loggerhead turtle and the hawksbill turtle.
