The island of Sri Lanka is abundantly blessed. It is often compared to paradise due to this. From early times there have been travellers coming to the island for various reasons. The South of the country was the first to boom in terms of tourism. Finding Bentota hotel accommodation is ideal since it offers easy access to the best of the South Coast. Designed by one of the most celebrated architects of Sri Lanka, AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa is a good option in this regard and is within easy reach of the Sea Turtle Hatchery in Bentota.
This sea turtle hatchery is a conservation site dedicated to protecting endangered turtle species. There are various such projects being carried out along the Southern coast of Sri Lanka. Those who work and volunteer here, often collect the eggs that are laid by turtles at night on the shore and take it back to the hatchery where conditions are suitable for hatching. If left to hatch naturally they would have a minimum chance of survival as often these eggs are eaten by animals along the beach or are poached. The hatchery encourages fishermen to bring the eggs to them by providing an attractive rate for the eggs they find along the shore. After hatching the baby turtles are kept in tanks for about three days and then released to the sea. However if there are injured ones that would not survive under natural conditions they are kept in the centre itself. Also some rare types of turtles are kept here for educational purposes. Many visitors stop by the centre to catch a glimpse of these beautiful sea creatures and most of the functioning of the centre is carried out through donations.
