The Ritigala range of mountains rises approximately 2000 ft from the ground level and is 42 km from Anuradhapura. This has three types of forests; sandwiched in the middle is the montane forest type and at the highest point you can find the upper montane forest. The dry mixed evergreen forest which is the bottom part of the mountain range. This is one of the strict nature reserves in Sri Lanka and to enter this area for a glimpse of this wonderful and mystical nature reserve not found anywhere else in the island requires prior permission obtained from the Forest Department.
The austere remains of the Ritigala monastery are hidden away on a mountain within this forest the monastery is said to be difficult to reach. The path into the monastery starts at the steps of a giant bath which were used by the monks in the monastery to cleanse themselves prior to entering. Strangely enough, nothing much is known about the fascinating ruins of the secluded mountain sanctuary of Ritigala. Visiting Ritigala is a must for all tourists as it is considered an amazing experience for everyone.
