The temple is known significantly for it’s holy water , which in Balinese Hindu belief has powers of purification. The temple was a product of the Warmadeva Dynasty and the construction began in the year 962 A.D. The temple was constructed around a large water spring and the name of the temple is derived from the name of the spring “Tirta Empul”. The temple is divided into three sections , Jaba Pura (front yard) , Jaba Tengah (Central Yard ) and Dan Jeroan the inner yard. The Jaba Tengah has two pools with thirty showers which are named accordingly. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu , the Hindu God of protection.
The temple bares some great Balinese- Hindu carvings and art works and is visited by locals and tourist alike. On the left side hill of the temple is a luxury villa constructed for the visit of the president which is currently used fro special guests.
