First decide whether you’re going to visit Kandy in a day or overnight trip. The city of Kandy is located about 3-4 hours away from Colombo, the commercial capital of the country. While it’s possible to explore the city within a day and see a few of its most popular of attractions, staying overnight at one of the Kandy hotels in Sri Lanka such as those by Earls Hotels would be the wise thing to do as you can get the most out of trip.
By Car or Train

Going by car gives you the ultimate freedom to stop wherever you want and travel to Kandy as you please. Tip: stop by Kadugannawa on your way and enjoy a corn on the cob while feasting your eyes on the spectacular view! However, the most recommended mode of transport to Kandy is going by train as it’s an experience in itself.

Plan your visit to avoid going to Kandy on a Full Moon Poya Day as during these days most of the shops are closed as well as a few of the attractions. The best time to visit Kandy is during the months of July and August when the Esala Perahera is being held. This magnificent parade is held in honor of the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. With the participation of hundreds of traditional dancers, performers and elephants; the event is one of the most extravagant in the country. Its best advised to book your tickets ahead and find yourself a comfortable seat to watch the parade.
