Phuket is probably the most well-known of Thailand’s islands. The island is known for its amazing beaches and vibrant nightlife scene, and no trip to Thailand can be considered complete without stopping by here. Patong and Kata are the usual hubs of activity as they contain the best beaches and the best nightlife. Those who prefer quieter beaches can try the towns of Kamala, Nai Yang and Nai Thon. Tourists who want to take a break from the beaches and explore the island’s historical and cultural roots can start by visiting Phuket Town.
Phuket Town is the island’s administrative district and is the largest town on the island. While it is not a major travel destination, the town does contain some interesting sights. Old Phuket Town is the areas historical region found along Krabi, Dibuk and Thalang Roads. It harkens to the days before the island became a major tourist destination, at a time when it derived its wealth from tin mining. Phuket’s extensive tin reserves attracted the interest of the Portuguese who eventually took over. The Portuguese left a lasting impression in the form of the ‘shop-houses’, a type of building that combines Portuguese and Chinese architectural styles. Visiting the houses in the area can make for an interesting afternoon. The Dibuk Grill and Bar and the House of Beautiful Images are two popular shop-houses.
The island is located near the Phang Nga Province and is connected to the mainland by a pair of bridges and it is possible to enter by bus and even train. A regular ferry service carries passengers to and from the harbour. Phuket also has an airport and one can charter a flight here. While it is relatively easy to get to Phuket, travelling within this destination can be a bit of a challenge. To minimise the hassles of travel tourists should consider renting a scooter and finding accommodation in a central location.
