The Petronas Towers or the Petronas Twin Towers is the iconic landmark in Kuala Lumpur. Known in Malay as Menara Berkembar Petronas or Menara Petronas it was ranked as the tallest building in the world from the years 1998 – 2004. The Petronas Twin Towers still has the distinction of being the world’s tallest twin and is built on the old Selangor Turf Club site. The inspiration for the 594.1 meter high, 88 storey twin towers was the then Prime Minister Dr, Mahathir Mohomad’s vision of Malaysia as a global player. The architect for the twin towers was Cesar Pelli.
The towers have a steel and glass façade similar to motifs found in Islamic art and this is a reflection of the country’s Muslim faith. Interactive displays showcase the project from conception to completion. The 86th floor houses the observation deck which offers panoramic views of the city. Both towers are joined at the 41/42 floors by a 58 meter long double deck sky bridge 170 meters above ground level. Suria KLCC is an upmarket retail center at the foot of the towers. The beautiful KLCC P ark has a jogging track and a kids’ wading pool. Housed here is the Petrosains Science Center showcasing the origins of petroleum in the age of the dinosaurs to modern petroleum developments. The Dewan Filoharmonik Petronas Concert Hall (Southeast Asia’s leading venue for classical music) and an Art Gallery are found in the KLCC complex.
