The city of Perth is the largest city in Western Australia and the fourth most populous overall in the entire continent. Considering the size of the city, the amount of attractions present within the city are fairly numerous, but one particular place that is still considered one of the top places to visit in the entire city, is the Perth Zoo, which is conveniently located just 3 km from the city centre, alongside iconic places such as COMO The Treasury, Perth, a most popular luxury hotel, Perth has to offer.
The Perth Zoo was officially opened in 1898 by the Governor of Western Australia Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Gerard Smith, with the goal of introducing European animals to the Australian habitat. The help of Albert Le Souef, Director of the Melbourne Zoo, was enlisted to help choose a site to set up the Zoo. Initially, the exhibits featured in the zoo comprised of two bear caves, a monkey house, a mammal house and a fairly small castle that was built to house Guinea Pigs. Additionally, the animals on display included an orangutan, two monkeys, four ostriches, a pair of Lions and a Tiger.
Fast-forward to the modern day, the Perth Zoo is an international-level icon in the realm of Zoos, whose gargantuan scope is divided among three main zones; Australian Walkabout, Asian Rainforest and African Savannah.
The Australian Walkabout section contains the Australian Wetlands, Penguin Plunge, Reptile Encounter, the Australian Bushwalk and the Nocturnal house. The African Savannah contains a wide variety of African animals in a meticulously re-created savannah. The Asian rainforest contains some of the most threatened Asian species including Sumatran Tigers, Red Pandas and Sun Bears.
