Oman is a wonderful country to explore, but as with any new destination, the more you know about it, the better prepared you will be; here are some useful tips that will help you when it’s time to pack!
Keep in Mind
Remember that Oman is a Muslim nation so when out in public, wearing conservative attire that covers bare shoulders, midriff and legs is the way to go; at private resorts, however, the dress codes are more relaxed. The country has a sub-tropical desert climate and can get quite hot so lightweight linen or cotton clothing would be ideal; of course, if you stay at properties like Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort amidst the blissful cooler climes of the Green Mountain a light sweater or jacket can come in handy too.
Clothing for Women
Avoid miniskirts, shorts and short tops as well as body-hugging attire when out in public; women should ideally pack ankle-length skirts and cotton pants, while a pashmina or sarong will be helpful when you need to cover up when visiting religious sites in Oman. Luxury resorts will often offer fine dining so bring an elegant evening dress for the occasion; a one-piece swimsuit would be preferable for your pool time though private resorts will often allow bikinis but check ahead to make sure.
Clothing for Men
Men can look to pack casual attire with loose-fitting cotton or linen shirts, t-shirts and slacks being amongst the ideal choices. While you can wear shorts in certain settings, remember to enter sites like mosques, you need to cover up, making ankle-length pants a good option. For time in the pool, relatively long bathing shorts would be preferable and a stylish shirt and / or blazer would be great for a romantic evening of fine dining.
Other Items
For footwear, sandals are perfect though if you are going hiking, sturdy boots or sneakers will be useful; for formal dining or events, have a pair of dressy shoes or high heels too. Since you’re likely to be out and about, bring plenty of effective sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or cap. Pack a lightweight daypack and a travel adapter plug (the voltage here is 240V) for your electronic devices as well.
