Despite being the second-largest city in Sri Lanka, Kandy is a very small town. There aren’t that many places to visit, but the rich historical ambience, streets filled with knickknacks, and Kandyan architecture is what’s worth seeing here. So, if you don’t have a lot of time, here’s what you’d want to see in Kandy in under 24 hours.
Staying the night or quick meals
If you’re planning to arrive from Colombo or any other destination and spend the night here, hotels in Kandy Sri Lanka range from super luxury to cosy little bungalows and holiday inns. If you want to splurge and relax there are places like the Cinnamon Citadel Kandy. If you’re just here for the day and want a quick snack, the Muslim Hotel has been an institution of Kandyan food for decades now. There’s also The Pub if you fancy a drink.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth
The temple is home to Sri Lanka’s most treasured Buddhist relic: a tooth of Buddha that was preserved from the flames at his burial. This is one of Sri Lanka’s holiest sites, with millions of Buddhists flocking there each year. The tooth is unveiled twice a day, and the shrine becomes quite crowded. If you want to observe locals worship, it may be an intriguing time to come, but if you are not used to crowds, it can be an overwhelming experience.
Kandy Lake
Take a leisurely walk around Kandy Lake after seeing the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. The side closest to the temple is the most tranquil, while the opposite side is a little busier with automobiles. Keep an eye out for the Kandy sunset over the lake in the evening. Continue your journey by shopping in Kandy Central Market, which is located near the Clock Tower. If you’re looking for spices, fruits, or leather goods, the market is a terrific place to go. It’s spread out across two levels and is centred around a neat courtyard.
Peradeniya Botanical Garden
Spend a few hours and end your day in Peradeniya Botanic Garden, Sri Lanka’s largest botanic garden. The garden is famous for its beautiful collection of orchids, elegant avenues lined with palm trees, an impressive bamboo forest, and more. Located 6 kilometres from Kandy, Peradeniya Botanic Garden is a place you must visit if you need a quick escape from the city’s crowds and noise!
