One of the most photographed places in Sri Lanka, this bridge in Ella is a mighty sight to look at and is a must visit if you love trains or amazing views.
The Bridge
This bridge is situated in between the two railway stations, namely, Ella and Demodara. The bridge rises about 3000ft above the sea levels and the scaffold is about 99ft tall. “Ahas namaye palama” is what the bridge is called in the native language, and it means the nine skies bridge. When you stand below the bridge and lift your head up, there is a wonderful view of ‘nine skies’ through the nine curves or aches the bridge has.
Structure
This monstrous extension is manufactured completely of strong rocks, blocks and concrete without utilizing a solitary bit of steel. The scaffold was at long last built in 1921.
Folklore
A famous story says that, when the building was to begin, the WWI began and the steel which was meant to be used in the construction of the bridge was taken over and used for war machinery and other purposes. At the point when the work ground to a halt local people approached and fabricated the scaffold with strong stone blocks and concrete without steel.
Location
If visiting the bridge is one of your things to do in Bandarawela, it is a good idea to stay at a place like Manor House to travel back and forth easily.
