Located off the west coast, Negombo is one of the major tourist cities in Sri Lanka. Close to the waterfront is Dutch Fort, which now serves as a prison. Negombo lagoon and Hamilton Canal are other primary features of the city.
Reminders of the past
The Dutch and the British found Negombo to be a strategic location. The city was one of the main sources of cinnamon, and it still touts tokens of the colonial era.

Getting around
From the airport, you can get a cab or a tuk-tuk, you will also find buses running back and forth. Most hotels and resorts provide their guests with transport; if you are a first-time visitor, getting your hotel to sort out transport is the best option for you.

Colonial attractions like Hamilton Canal and the Dutch Fort are must-visits. Boat trips, diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing are among the other things you can do in Negombo.
