Negombo is a city located on the west coast of Sri Lanka a mere 4 km from the Bandaranayaka International air port. Its beautiful beaches and colonial architecture make it a popular hunt among tourists visiting the island. The people of Negombo welcomed the religion with open arms and it is said that during the Portuguese era, of the 70,000 Catholics found in the western coast the majority was found in Negombo and surrounding area. During the Dutch era the Catholics were much oppressed but the people of the city remained strong in their faith and when religious freedom was won again during the British era, there were more than 14,000 Catholics in Negombo. Close to 65% of the population in Negombo are said to be Catholics.
This religious fervor present in this region has brought about few architectural marvels and stunning paintings and statues. There are many beautiful churches built in the gothic style during the Portuguese era that are now a cultural heritage and a pride and joy to believers. There are close to 50 churches and shrines within the city limits and the most famous and beautiful among them are St. Mary’s church, Katuwapitiya church and Grand Street Church. These are some of the most ornate buildings with detailed paintings by the Buddhist artist N.S. Godamanne, are some of the biggest parishes in the city. Designed to replicate the Reems Cathedral in France, St. Sebastian’s Church on Sea Street is one of the most beautiful churches in the Island. Casting its long shadows on the blue waters of the lagoon, St. Stephen’s Church over the Dutch Fort provides a picturesque sight.
