While Luang Prabang is famed for its temples that are part of its UNESCO World Heritage Site, it also offers easy access to key natural attractions too like those mentioned below.
Kuang Si Waterfall
Set amidst verdant jungle landscapes, the cascading waters of Kuang Si Waterfall make it amongst the most picturesque natural attractions in Luang Prabang; hotels in the town provide excursions to this site with some offering a private cruise as part of the adventure. Featuring a 50-metre drop and three tiers, this waterfall is a great place to unwind, have a dip in its pools or hike to the top for some stunning views.
Mekong River
The famed Mekong River makes its way past the town offering an ideal chance for excursions along this mighty waterway. Properties like Avani+ Luang Prabang are just a five-minute walk away and make an ideal base from which to set out on memorable journeys; options include sunset and dinner cruises that let you take in the spellbinding beauty of the river bordered by mountain ranges and ancient forests.
Mount Phousi
Located in the heart of Luang Prabang is Mount Phousi which translates to “sacred mountain”. Rising to a height of around 100 metres, this mountain lies nestled between both the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers that provide an idyllic backdrop; it’s a popular spot to catch a magical sunrise or sunset from its summit where you will also find the sacred That Chomsi, a gilded stupa that adds to the mountain’s charm.
Pak Ou Caves
Another natural attraction that has also become a revered religious site, the Pak Ou Caves are well worth visiting as well. Getting to these caves amidst a dramatic limestone cliff as part of a cruise adventure adds to the enthralling experience; once here, you can wander around cave temples where you will find thousands of Buddha icons left by devotees that create a unique sight and atmosphere.
