The Maldives is the smallest country in the Indian Ocean. It is made up of almost two thousand islands that are divided into twenty six natural atolls. The picturesque setting is enhanced by island resorts in Maldives that extend over the crystal clear water. Pristine beaches, clear blue lagoons, colourful coral reefs and tall palms add to the natural beauty. One could easily be tempted to do nothing but look out over the sparkling ocean while sipping a fruity cocktail. Luxury and relaxation go hand in hand at the Maalifushi by COMO, Maldives in the Thaa Atoll.
Male, the capital of the Maldives is also the most populated city in the country. It is known for its many historic mosques and religious sites as well as brightly coloured skyscrapers, bustling markets and shops. Male is also home to Sultan Park. Sultan Park is a leisure park that was once a popular recreational venue with beautifully landscaped lawns complete with several lily ponds, a grand selection of tropical plants and majestic trees. The park now stands where the Royal Palace once stood. Only one building belonging to the Palace remains and it houses The National Museum.
Also a part of the National Museum is the National Art Gallery which was first opened in 1999 by the Maldivian Government. The opening of the gallery was for the purpose of sourcing and collecting fine art. A permanent art collection is currently being established and expanded. Additionally, an exhibition hall is used for displaying the work of local and foreign artists on a temporary basis. The National Art Gallery also plays host to the biennial Maldives Contemporary Exhibition, an initiative to promote Maldivian artists. The exhibition displays a range of art, from photography and painting to conceptual works of art. The National Library is also housed alongside the Art Gallery within the National Museum building.
