If you are a foodie or are just looking to enjoy discovering new flavours when dining in Maldives, here are some of the quintessential dishes to have on your culinary adventures.
Mas Huni
Traditionally eaten at breakfast, “mas huni” consists of shredded tuna that is mixed with grated coconut, onions, chilli and lime. Be it at a local restaurant or tropical island luxury resort, Maldives dining experiences feature this heavenly concoction which is usually served with a flatbread called “roshi” and hot tea.
Kukulhu Riha
Curries are popular here including “kukulhu riha”, the local name for chicken curry. On the menu at restaurants of resorts the likes of Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, this chicken coconut curry has distinctive spices that lend to the flavour; it is ideal to enjoy with steamed rice and some crispy papadams.
Mas Riha
Of course, no mention of curies would be complete without highlighting one that is made with a commonly found ingredient in Maldivian cuisine; fish! “Mas riha” is the term for fish curry (generally featuring tuna) which has its own set of spices and can be savoured with rice or flatbread and dhal curry.
Ghee Cake
A perfect blend of sweet and savoury, “githeyo boakibaa” is a kind of ghee cake; it consists of ground rice and coconut milk combined with other ingredients like cardamom, cinnamon, onions fried in ghee and jasmine-infused water. Some resorts in Maldives offer cooking classes where you can learn to make it too!
