Among the many cultural specialities of Sri Lanka, the Kandy Perehara, which is a procession held in Kandy, Sri Lanka stands of vital importance.
It begins from the most sacred place of Sri Lanka
As you must be aware, Kandy is home to the Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic and this procession begins from here.
It has several names
This perehara is also called the Esala Perehara. As it starts from the Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic, they also call it the Dalada Perehara.
It happens in August
The procession happens in August every year. Kandy hotel prices generally go up during this time because of the increased demand. So, make sure you book Hotel Topaz or any other hotel much in advance.
It’s bound with Hindu shrines as well
Four other sub-processions are also present here. Namely- the Natha Devala procession, Vishnu Devala procession, Kataragama Devala procession, and the Paththini Devala procession.
It’s a beautiful cultural blend
As you can see, both Buddhist and Hindu cultures have a strong influence on the rituals of this grand procession. That doubles the grandness and the beauty of this perehara for sure.
