The site of the old city of Colin in the northern half of an island in the Spree river, the Museum Island is so called due to the existence of five internationally significant museums on its shores. The five museums are namely Altes Museum opened in 1830, The Neues Museum that was destroyed in World war II and rebuilt , The Alte National gallery that contains art donated by Banker Joachim, the Bode Museum that exhibits sculpture collections and the Peragamon Museum that was constructed in the early 1930s and contains historically significant buildings such as the Ishtar Gate of Babylon.
The Museum Island also contains the Lustgarten Park, the Berlin Cathedral, the site of the former Stadschlos and the Palace of the public. Having stood tall, amongst the winds of change, wars and several eras it took most of the 1990s for the then governors to realize that the Museum island’s buildings need to be restored. UNESCO declared the island rich in history and heritage and declared it a World Heritage Site in 2010.
