The beautiful island of Bali is famous for its lush green forests and volcanic landscapes, steeped in age-old traditions. Travellers to this paradise island generally head to the island’s coastline – areas like Nusa Dusa and Uluwatu are celebrated for their white sand beaches and clear waters. Accommodation wise, there are plenty of options, from budget rooms to a unique boutique resort in Bali, such as the Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort, which is located on a cliff side. Whilst the coast has plenty to see and experience, head further inland to discover the heart of Bali, in the cool mountains of Ubud.
The green valleys, quiet villages and thick forests whisk you away from the usual tourist spots and bring you closer to the real essence of Balinese culture. One of Ubud’s must see locations are the Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest. The forestland which is full of giant nutmeg trees is home to Bali’s long-tailed grey macaque.
There are reportedly 600 mischievous macaques, divided into 5 families that live in different territories within the sanctuary. Whilst the mostly spending their time swinging high above the tree tops or scampering across trails, conflicts have been known to arise between the families. The macaques were once well-known for stealing and pick-pocketing visitors, but over the past few years, their behaviour has improved, thanks to better management. However, it’s always best to be safe than sorry – all visitors are asked to keep valuables away and remain watchful of the roaming macaques.
Apart from the macaques, there are plenty of other things to see in the sanctuary. Deep within the forest are ancient, moss covered temples, and stone statues. If you don’t have time to explore them all, one you must see is the most famous temple, the 17th century Bukit Sari Temple. Try to dedicate at least half a day to exploring the Monkey Forest and enjoy the sight of Bali’s monkey families.
