Located 182km away from the capital city of Colombo, the Minneriya National Park is situated close to the Cultural Triangle is also known as the location where occurs the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.
What You Can Do
The main reason you would go to Minneriya is, of course, to look at elephants; especially the magnificent elephant gathering, where during the season, over 300 elephants congregate near the Minneriya tank to socialise.

It is a spectacle worth viewing and visitors staying in a nearby Sigiriya hotel will get there bright and early during the months of May to October.
The Climate and Altitude
The national park covers an area of 8900 hectares and has a tropical monsoon climate with an annual rainfall of 1146mm. Temperatures reach a mean of 27.5 centigrade.
