To reach the peak of Mihintale, there are 1,840 steps cut into the rock. Daily, visitors of all ages reach the top and though it may be a tiring climb for some, it is well worth it. A beautiful temple has also been built there to preserve the sanctity of the spot. It is also here that King Devanampiyatissa is said to have encountered Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist priest who arrived from India, in 247 BC. Mahinda Thero preached the teachings of the Buddha to the king, and thus began Buddhist rule in the island. Relics of both the Buddha and Mahinda Thero are said to be enshrined in temples on the picturesque mountain.
