Among the many ancient temples in Chiang Mai, one of the most popular is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. This Theravadha Buddhist temple was constructed in 1383 by King Keu Naone, and is one of the better preserved temples of Chiang Mai. Located about 15km from the centre Chiang Mai, this temple is steeped in legend and is one of the most intriguing and beautiful temples in the area.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is believed to have been founded when a relic of Lord Buddha was given to King Keu Naone. According to legend, the relic was placed on the back of a white elephant and was then set out into the woods. The elephant is said to have proceeded to the site of where the temple stands today, and dropped dead. This was considered to be an omen, and was taken to mean that this should be the final resting place of the temple. Within the temple one can witness a range if stunning statues, carvings, and shrines which have stood the test of time. One of the most fascinating beliefs attached to the temple is that if one were to make a wish by making an offering to the temple and making three clockwise walks around the chedi of the temple, that the wish will be granted. Many locals and even tourists partake in this unique ritual, so go ahead and see if your wishes will be granted too.
