The Asian island of Sri Lanka, known fondly as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a tourist paradise with diverse climates, iconic architecture and a culture deeply entrenched in history. For the few who wish to explore the beautiful island away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotspots of Colombo, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa along the Southern coastal belt, the town of Koggala marks a truly hidden treasure of Sri Lanka. However, this is not to say that the town is not home to Koggala hotels at all; they are merely few and far between in comparison to the abundance of resorts in other parts of the coastal belt. Nevertheless, tourists and locals can choose to opt for accommodation at the South Lake Resort, and those who are unable to do so can always commute from some of the busier tourist destinations such as Galle and Unawatuna.
Situated considerably away from cities and towns with a frenetic pace, the sleepy town of Koggala is home to the alluring Koggala Lake. While the town is bound by a reef on one side, and a lake on the other, it is replete with iconic sights. Similar to the Muthurajawela marshes, the Koggala Lake hosts mangroves and is home to numerous avian species. However, unlike the boat tours of Muthurajawela, those offered by the few boat operators in Koggala, are underrated, a bit expensive, but far more peaceful.
While a boat ride around this vast and peaceful lake takes around ninety minutes, it is certainly an experience worth having for the ride not only includes a serene chug around the lake, but stops at small islands as well. One of these islands is home to a temple, while another hosts a cinnamon plantation. Such a boat ride provides an overall and comprehensive way to explore the Koggala Lake, its birdlife and its people. It is also one of the many wonderful experiences that can be had in this small island paradise.
