The magical Stone Forest or Shilin located in the Chinese province of Yunnan has acquired a firm reputation as a recognized visitor attraction. This spectacular creation of nature has been a recognized regional attraction since the days of the Ming Dynasty.
The Stone Forest extends over a vast expanse measuring 400 sq km, and includes innumerable scenic highlights. As you walk through the area you will see a mesmerizing array of spectacular formations, each more amazing than the previous one. Many of the formations are intricate and resemble exquisite artworks created by a skilled artisan. The visitor will be bewitched by the labyrinthine passageways lined by strange and mysterious stone wonders. Another interesting attraction is the Strange Wind Cave, from which strong gales lasting up to three minutes blow approximately every half hour. Here you will see the Hongxi Spring, Penfeng Cave and a tranquil underground stream.
Not to be missed is the intriguing Long Lake which is actually a karst lake, 3km long but just 300 m in width. Here you will see unusual underwater stalactites and stalagmites as well as a small islet at the centre of the lake.
Experts say that this area was covered by seas millions of years ago. Over the centuries geological movements caused the waters to recede, exposing the limestone formations. Finally after centuries of erosion by the natural elements the structures seen today were formed.
