Sailing down the river, you will count 36 spectacular islands on which there is an abundance of life in all forms.
Maha Duwa which translates to large island from the Sinhala Language is as its name suggests the largest island. It is vast enough to accommodate a charming monastery which holds a little bit of history. Legend also suggests that the Sacred Tooth Relic was once enshrined in the island. These are facts will keep you fascinated throughout your trip.
What’s more? The wildlife is sure to keep you enthralled. Monkeys, water monitor lizards, cormorants, egrets, kingfishers and even crocodiles paint the picture brilliantly. You can choose to depart either at 10 a.m or 3 p.m. If you have an option it is best to sail in the evening when the river and its surroundings are also delicately touched by the buzz of shrimp fishery.
