Sri Lanka has over 150 rivers that flow across the island. One of the rivers that flow across in the Southern region and is famous for it’s river safaris is Madu Ganga. This is a wetland area close to the Southern belt of Sri Lanka and covers an area of approximately 900 hectares, most of it is water, though. There are also 64 islands of Madu Ganga. There are various tour operators that do safaris on the river. Madu Ganga Hotels are located close to the river as well as other attractions. The tours ideally last around 2 to 3 hours and are done either in the early hours or later in the evenings. There are also some of the hotels that organize these river safaris, one such hotel is The River House.
One of the key attractions on one of these tours is the mangrove forests. They are rich in biodiversity and the boats are able to ride through these forests. These mangroves are also home to various birds and animals.
While on the safari one can see the neighboring villages, whose main livelihood is fishing. There are also special types of fishing methods known as Kraal fishing. They are set up with bamboos and is a traditional method of fishing. The newest addition to the safari is you may stop and enjoy a quick pampering, that is a fish pedicure- fish therapy. The smallest island on Madu Ganga is named after the five-cent coin used in Sri Lanka and is known as Satha 5 Duwa. Koth Doowa temple is located on another small island and is the only construction on this island. Another temple that can be visited is the Maa Doowa Temple. The boo tree in this temple dates back to around 600 years.
