Geoffrey Bawa was a man of vision. The architect who was a Sri Lankan has now been recognized as one of the most highly regarded, influential and eminent persons of his time. The global recognition that he claimed was reinstated in the year 2001 at the moment that he was awarded with the “Special Chairman’s Award” during the eighth Aga Khan Award ceremony held for architects. He became the third person to be honoured with this award since the beginning of it.
Lunuganga Gardens is yet another piece of beautiful evidence that depicts the mosaic of creative genius that was Bawa’s mind. His creation has been able to attract many nature and architecture lovers from far and wide up to date. The entrance to the garden was formerly intended to be the entryway to the house. The entrance was decided by Bawa when he went into renovating the house in the year 1947. The portico of the house as well as the glass room, were bits and pieces that were added to this creation during the 1980 renovations. These renovations seem have been brought in as a way of replacing the thatch-incorporated carport that was originally located in the spot.
The much renowned red terrace has been given that name owing to the red coloured surface that has naturally been present there. There is also a water garden in the Lunuganga Gardens and it is believed that the view you get as you look down upon the water garden was one of Bawa’s choice views. The yellow courtyard is also named as such owing to the colour of the walls that surround it. The board walk and the black pavilion are other places that are beautifully incorporated into this architectural masterpiece which has been created by Bawa. Visiting the gardens is among one of the most popular things to do in Bentota and the location of the garden is in close proximity to many modern amenities and accommodations such as Saman Villas and many others located within half an hour of the garden.
