Wuxi’s famed Liyuan Garden is renowned as one of the city’s most attractive areas of greenery and is recognized as one of the most scenic locations in the entire nation. Bordering a lake of the same name, the acclaimed garden sprawls over an area of no less than 8.2 hectares. According to tradition the garden was originally created by Fan Li, a high ranking official of the State of Yue during the eventful Spring and Autumn era. The legend goes that Li was instrumental in enabling his monarch to overcome another state in a military conquest.
After this monumental success Li chose to live a tranquil life with a famed Chinese beauty, Xi Shi. The two made their home in this area of the country and often went boating on the local lake. Accordingly the garden and lake were named after this famous official.
The lovely garden is encircled by water on three of its sides. The visitor will see verdant hillocks in the far distance, as well as an extensive corridor, a dike and rockery at closer range. It is possible to categorize the features of the parkland into three main sections. In the central section you will see artificial hillocks of varying styles and shapes; some are angular whilst others display a rounded appearance. A stone pathway winds its way through the hillocks, making the visitor feel as if he or she is in a maze.
Meanwhile in the western section you will see scenic attractions like the Four Season Pavilions and the extensive dike. Not to be passed over is the eastern section which boasts attractions like its extended corridor and handsome pavilions.
A special feature of the location is that different varieties of flowers have been planted near each pavilion. For example oleanders have been planted next to the Summer Pavilion, plum blossoms near the Spring Pavilion, sweet-smelling osmanthus next to the Autumn Pavilion and calyx canthus beside the Winter Pavilion.
