Having started operations over 20 years ago, the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Programme has become one of the island’s top attractions for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Main Objective
As a site that those based at HARRIS Hotel & Residence Riverview Kuta Bali or any other hotel in Kuta Bali will inevitably frequent, the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation hub remains one of Bali’s best environmental efforts. Established to protect small turtle eggs that are often destroyed due to human activity, the conservation centre provides a safe haven for hatchlings until they are ready to make the journey back to the sea.
Legacy of Conservation
For over 20 years, this eco-friendly initiative that was the brainchild of Mr Wayan and Mr Agung has been making a difference in the survival of this endangered species.
Activities
Turtle rangers who work for the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Programme visit the beaches of Kuta after dark to in order to allow adult sea turtles the space they need to lay their eggs in peace. Later, these eggs are removed to the hatchery so they do not face the dangers posed by human and other natural predators including reptiles. After a hatchling has emerged from the egg in two months, they are released to the ocean.
How You Can Help
In addition to visiting the conservation centre and learning more about the habitat of sea turtles and the threats they face, visitors can also take part in various activities to directly contribute to the conservation efforts. Digital nomads with a passion for the environment can volunteer to release baby turtles back into the ocean.
