The Kosgoda coastline is known for being one of Sri Lanka’s many locations in which turtles thrive. The beaches are known for being turtle nesting sites and, thus, it is a premier location for a turtle hatchery – which is exactly why the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, one of the best places to visit in Kalutara, was formed.
Turtle Conservation
Sri Lanka is home to five species of turtles; the Green Turtle, the Leatherback, the Hawksbill, the Loggerhead and the Olive Ridley. Unfortunately, these species are considered to be threatened which is why turtle conservation projects are common in Sri Lanka. The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is one such conservation project, which focuses on safeguarding turtle hatchlings and spreading awareness about these fascinating creatures. Many Kalutara hotels, such as the Anantara Kalutara Resort, encourage visitors to go ahead to this hatchery and be amazed.
What happens at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery?
Safeguarding hatchlings until they are mature enough to survive in the ocean is a proven way of conserving turtles in Sri Lanka. Attacks from predators and disturbances due to human activity threaten the hatchlings when they are very young, so the members of the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery collect turtle eggs off the beach and carefully place them in simulated beaches. Once the eggs hatch the hatchlings are placed in special tanks which provide the hatchlings with a safe environment. When the hatchlings are more mature and better able to survive out in the open, they are released into the ocean. The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery also has several older turtles, including turtles with deformities, in order to give them safety and shelter.
The Experiences
The hatchling releasing is, undoubtedly, one of the most unique experiences offered by the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery. Here, the hatchlings are taken to the beach released a few yards away from the waterline, so that the hatchlings can make their way to the water on their own. It really is a great experience to be a part of, and volunteering at this hatchery will give you the opportunity to work more closely with these remarkable creatures.
