Did you know that out of the seven turtle species that are on record, five can be found roaming the South Coast of Sri Lanka? As amazing as it may sound, it is rather disheartening that these graceful creatures are facing extinction simply because of inconsiderate activities of humans. The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, a centre to protect these endangered creatures, was thus founded on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. Located less than 30 minutes away from Amba Ayurveda Boutique Hotel, a prominent Ayurveda Hotel in Sri Lanka, Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a must-visit during your next trip to the island.
In an attempt to ensure that the turtle population increases, the Hatchery engages in a sea turtle egg protection project. Volunteers or members of the Hatchery patrol the beach at night, waiting for the mother turtles to come ashore and lay their eggs. Once the eggs have been laid, and mother turtle departs, the members transfer the eggs from the beach to the hatchery. This is done mainly to prevent the locals from selling these eggs for food. Sea turtle eggs are considered a delicacy in this part of the world. Once the eggs hatch, baby turtles are returned to the sea, their natural habitat, as soon as possible. It is a sight to behold when hundreds of little turtles try to waddle their way down the beach to the arms of the beckoning ocean.
Not only does the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery safeguard the process of turtle hatching, but they are also concerned about adult sea turtles. Disabled sea turtles are homed in the Hatchery and medical care is provided for them until they are fit to be released. On any given day, you will be able to see at least a couple of disabled turtles who are wholly dependent upon the Hatchery for their survival. In addition, the Hatchery also treats sea turtles who have been injured due to fishing. These turtles are released back as soon as the treatments are done.
Whether you are a fan of sea creatures or not, you should visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery. Holding a turtle in the palm of your hand is an experience that you are unlikely to forget.
