Geography
Located within the Lesser Sunda Islands, the park is composed of three large islands namely, Komodo, Padar and Rinca and over 26 other smaller islands. The park spans across an area of 1733 square kilometres. It is believed that the island cluster was formed due to volcanic activity millions of years ago.
Flora and fauna
As you would have guessed by the name the park is home to the largest lizard on earth. The Komodo dragon! Being an endemic species 1000 of these magnificent creatures has made the islands as their natural habitat. Several other marine and land creatures also inhabit these islands and they also support a variety of fauna some of which are endemic.

Conservation
In the year 1938 the islands, Padar and Rinca were established as nature reserves and Komodo Island in 1965. During the year 1984, the whole region was declared as a biosphere reserve under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere program. In 1991 it was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
