If you’re looking for places to explore in Colombo, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Gangaramaya Temple. Part Buddhist temple and part museum, a trip here can be both educational and memorable – so, here’s a look at what you can expect.
The Location
If you’re staying at a centrally-located luxury hotel Colombo has to offer – for instance, the Cinnamon Grand Colombo – the temple is only a quick drive away. It’s open from 6 am to 8 pm and the entrance is absolutely free!
The History
The temple was established in the 19th century by a rich mudaliyar – a local merchant. Subsequently, a stupa was built and a bo sapling was planted to officially make it a temple. Following this, a three-story preaching hall was also added.
The Museum
The Museum at the Gangaramaya Temple makes the whole visit worth it all on its own. Here you can find an array of Buddha statues that belong to various eras, ancient scriptures, curios and so much more!
The Lake
The Beira Lake is found a few hundred metres away from the temple premises and it has its own sense of calmness and tranquillity. This is a great location to just take it easy and let the scenery wash over you.
