The allure of Sri Lanka is very clear: pristine, sandy beaches, a fascinating culture and a startling spectrum of landscape. It truly has something for every one of the millions of tourists arriving throughout the year. But recently, one of the island’s most unique features has drawn in a whole new clientele. The kitesurfing community of Sri Lanka is growing at an astonishing rate, with tourists finally exploiting the incessant wind of the West coast.
With wind usually at speeds of 18 to 20 knots, and sometimes even faster, it was only a matter of time before Kalpitiya, on the West coast of the island, was unearthed as one of the world’s most exhilarating kitesurfing destinations. Located 2.5 hours from the airport and with links to both the Wilpattu Wildlife Reserve and the famous Cultural Triangle, the Kalpitiya peninsula is the perfect place to start any trip to Sri Lanka, be it for extreme sports or otherwise. Crashing waves and roaring winds are music to the ears of the veteran kite surfer, whilst beginners can enjoy the tranquil waters of Kalpitiya lagoon as a starting point. For the experienced kiteboarder, the ocean directly in front of Palagama Beach Resort is about as good at it gets in Sri Lanka: the wind is simply unstoppable, day and night, and it is bound to become one of Kalpitiya’s busiest spots.
Lessons are also organised by IKO and AKI certified instructors from some of the inevitable kitesurfing schools that are appearing, with Palagama working closely in conjunction with them to appease the expanding market for kitesurfing. Equipment is available on request and there is no shortage of spots to enjoy an exotic and exciting kitesurfing experience.
Any skill level is catered for in this unique and beautiful location, be it in the lagoon, Palagama Beach, a beautiful Sri Lanka resort or elsewhere. Kitesurfing Sri Lanka has already seen a huge growth and kiteboarders across the world are discovering Sri Lanka’s newest extreme water sport hotspot.
