The Khlongs of Thornburi refer to canals that run through the Thornburi area, which at one time was the capital of Bangkok in the era of King Taksin. Now Thornburi forms a part of Bangkok, and lies on the western side of the city beginning from the Chao Phraya River. The canals in Thornburi are filled with many boats that can be hired by tourists wishing to explore this unique area by water. An exploration trip along these Khlongs are bound to take you to a completely different world from Bangkok’s everyday hustle and bustle.
The long tailed boats that run along these canals make for a pretty sight with its vibrant colours. Much of the Khlongs are surrounded by beautiful lush greenery, whilst there are also many ‘floating markets’ located along the canals, providing a unique setting. A boat can be hired from the Tha Chang pier close to Grand Palace or from the River City Shopping complex pier. Upon hiring a boat, tourists should visit places such as the Klong Bangkok Noi, the Khlong Mon, the Klong Bangkok Yai and the Royal Barges Museum.
The Klong Mon is quaint in its atmosphere as there are many houses with a dock found here, and a lot of natural plant life and greenery. Within the range of townhouses and weathered old homes, an odd temple can be located in the criss-cross of canals. The Klong Bangkok Noi is much more exciting as you get the feel you are boating along a river rather than a canal. These wider canals are lined with many temples, navy sites and more homes. Many of the people staying along these canals, depend on the boats as a means of transport.
The Royal Barges Museum is also a must see. Housed in large shed, this colourful museum displays barges that were once used in formal events such as Royal ceremonies. Up close you will be able to admire the fine artwork and gilding that cover these barges.
A visit to Bangkok would not be complete without viewing this hidden and beautiful side of the city. Tourists looking to explore the city from a Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel should consider staying at the Bangkok Grand President. This complex lies in a prime spot in the hub of the city’s entertainment, commercial and shopping areas, and provides elegant Bangkok serviced apartments to relax in.
