Amongst the best things to do in Khao Lak, Thailand is to head off on scuba diving adventures and here are some of the underwater hotspots that you can explore.
The Similan Islands
Set amidst the clear waters of the Andaman Sea, the Similan Islands and its national marine park offer spectacular underwater discoveries. Those based at properties like Avani+ Khao Lak Resort can easily enjoy diving excursions to the four accessible islands where one can see a vibrant array of coral as well as marine species including reef fish, reef sharks, scorpionfish, lionfish and sometimes, manta rays too.
Koh Bon
The island of Koh Bon is around 40 km away and is another ideal diving destination to reach from resorts in Khao Lak. Here, the main dive site is at the western ridge which reaches a depth of approximately 45 metres and is home to soft coral. You can look forward to seeing octopus, boxfish, pipefish and moray eels, while at Koh Bon Ridge, one may spot manta rays (January to April) and leopard sharks as well.
Boonsang Wreck
You can also explore intriguing wrecks while diving in Khao Lak with Boonsang Wreck being one of the highlights. This submerged mining vessel can be found around 5 km from Bangsak Beach and features rich marine biodiversity that’s well worth witnessing. Popular amongst beginners and pros alike, this site is where one can see scorpionfish, lionfish, crocodile fish, stonefish and maybe even whale sharks.
Koh Tachai
Another popular island for scuba diving, Koh Tachai is about 40 km from the Similan Islands. At a depth ranging from 12 to 15 metres, one will come across a colourful array of hard coral that will be a stunning sight to behold. On your underwater adventures, you may also encounter triggerfish, batfish, glassfish and barracudas, though keep in mind that this site is more suited for experienced divers.
