The charming town of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka offers a number of engrossing attractions for the visitor. When selecting Trincomalee hotels an appealing choice would be the Chaaya Blu Trincomalee, a quality hotel that offers fine accommodations and luxurious amenities in an attractive setting.
The popular Kanniya hot water wells are considered to be one of Trincomalee’s renowned attractions. Many visitors who arrive at the town make it a point to bathe at this reputed site. There are in fact seven hot water springs situated at this location, all of which have been transformed into bathing wells. Interestingly the temperature of the water at each of the wells is different from that of the others. According to popular belief the water found in these wells is thought to possess extraordinary therapeutic powers, with the ability to cure a host of ailments.
You will find that the seven hot wells are square in shape, and only three to four feet in depth. In fact it is easily possible for a visitor to readily discern the bottoms of the wells. Since the wells do not contain a large quantity of water, it is usually the case that the water runs out when 10 to 15 bucketfuls are removed from each well. Therefore visitors may be seen going from well to well looking for water. For obvious reasons using soap at these wells is prohibited.
Some interesting legends have been associated with the Kanniya hot water wells. The tory goes that King Ravana (the demon king mentioned in the Ramayana) was responsible for their creation; according to the legend this king struck the ground with his sword in several places, thereby causing water to gush out. According to other traditions the site was once part of a Buddhist monastery, and you will see a number of ancient ruins which may have been a part of this monastery. The Kanniya water wells are a significant visitor attraction which will appeal to tourists both foreign and local.
