The Kaludiya Pokuna is an ancient site that belongs to the period of 853 – 857 A.D. It is said to be built during the reign of King Sena the 2nd. This sacred site was once used by Buddhist monks as a centre for meditation. Kaludiya Pokuna is located about 4 hours from Colombo, so if you’re planning a visit here, it’s better to stay at a Dambulla hotel such as the Jetwing Lake resort; as then you can travel with ease.
Lying at the base of a rocky ledge, the Kaludiya Pokuna ancient Buddhist monastery is surrounded by a beautiful forest home to many species of butterflies, birds, and mammals some of which are endemic. So butterfly and bird watchers will also be satisfied with a visit to Kaludiya Pokuna. Within its premises, you will find the remains of a stupa as well as those of residences and ‘kuti’ which are the special meditating huts. The name Kaludiya Pokuna which translates to ‘the pond of black water’ is owing to there being said to be a pond that had dark water at ancient times. Even today there are two ponds in the area, but whether they are ‘black’ as the name suggests is for you, the traveller to decide.
