There are a number of islets that are governed by the city, and some of them are relatively large inhabited islets. There are also a few where there are no people living in them due to their small size and lack of facilities. Some of these are found in the well-known Yangtze River delta region. The exact number of the islets has not been finalized, due to the fact that boundaries keep disappearing and appearing on account of the constant submergence and emergence of the islands by the fickle tides. However, it is said that there are about 20 islands in the region (give or take).
Some of the islets of Shanghai are Dajinshan, Jiuduansha, Xiaojinshan, Fushan, Changxing, Hengsha, and Chongming Island. While some of them are declared nature reserves that prohibit human settlement on account of conservation efforts, they can be visited to explore the rich biodiversity of the region. Dajinshan is also home to the highest point in the region and it is almost 340 feet high.
Jiuduansha has a wet land reserve that can be divided into three distinct parts. One of the most important amongst these is Chongming. It is believed that the land has been formed by the silt that was carried along the Yangtze River over thousands of years and it is the third-largest island in the region. Hengsha, Changxing and Chongming are the isles that bear human settlement, and they are expected to be connected to the mainland by bridge in the near future.
For those who have a few days to spare, day trips or even over-night excursions can be made to these many isles along the city to explore their stunning natural beauty, the beaches, and the lively local atmosphere.
Expatriate families currently residing at a service apartment Shanghai as part of a work contract or a long-term stay will find that the islands afford a fun getaway, either for a day trip or an exciting overnight stay. It is ideal for families with young children and even for adults to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. If you’re seeking a stylish hotel apartment Shanghai has to offer its leisure and corporate visitors, the Citadines Biyun Shanghai boasts gracious accommodation and a central location, putting you within easy travelling distance of the islands.
